Francorchamps. The Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium based Mühlner Motorsport Team will be contesting the sixth round of the 2011 ADAC GT Masters at the Eurospeedway Lausitz in the first weekend of September.
Team regular Frank Schmickler (Rösrath / 45) returns to action in the number 5 Porsche 911 GT3 R, the broken ribs which he suffered in an accident at the Nürburgring at the beginning of July should not present a problem. He had to miss the fifth round in mid-August at the Red Bull Ring in Austria as he wasn't sufficiently recovered. This ended a remarkable record – Schmicki had been the only driver to have contested every single round of the ADAC GT Masters since its introduction in 2007.
Charly Geipel (Plauen / 21) shared the WEG Porsche in the first four ADAC GT Masters championship weekends but he too was unable to race at the Red Bull Ring due to an old ski injury giving unexpected problems. Unlike Schmickler, Geipel's problems will not be over in time for the Eurospeedway Lausitz; indeed he may have to sit out the rest of the season.
The British driver Sean Edwards (Monaco / 24) will thus be drafted in to share the GT3 R with Frank Schmickler. The Brit, who won the FIA European GT3 Championship in 2006, and currently competes very successfully in the Porsche Carrera Cup and Supercup series, drove for the Mühlner Team in the first round of the 2009 FIA GT3 season – he qualified the car on the front row and brought the car into his driver change pitstop in the lead.
Who will be driving the second Mühlner Team Porsche at the Eurospeedway Lausitz is not yet certain: "we are in discussion with several interested parties" explained team manager Bernhard Mühlner
"I'm relieved that Schmicki's recovery is far enough that he can drive at the Lausitzring, particularly as we expect our Porsche to go well there" were team boss Renate-Carola Mühlner's expectations "In 2008 we were able to win both races with the Cup S, laying the foundations for our championship win that season. In 2010's Sunday race we were second and only 2 seconds behind the winners. Sean was here with the Carrera Cup series earlier this season and scored a podium"
"I'm really pleased to be back behind the wheel of the Mühlner Team's WEG Porsche" said Frank Schmickler "to compete at the Red Bull Ring would have been too early and my doctors advised against it. But now I'm fit and raring to go!"
Sean Edwards is also looking forward to the ADAC GT Masters: "with over 40 cars and lots of top drivers, the ADAC GT Masters ist the most competitive GT3 Championship in the world at the moment. I have driven both for and against Mühlner Motorsport and know that their cars are always very competitive – let's see what we can achieve together at the Eurospeedway!"
